European neighbours have imposed travel bans on the United Kingdom after a new variant and 70% more transmissible virus takes hold during Christmas. Canada is the latest in all countries to halt flights from the UK after this news.
The Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Sunday, the new coronavirus variant is “out of control” and has prompted the UK government to impose a Tier 4 Lockdown after the 3-Tier System in South-eastern England and London.
On the same day, the UK broke its record of daily coronavirus cases and reached 35,928 new cases. In addition, it was announced that 326 people further died within the first 28 days of testing positive for the virus resulting UK’s total deaths to 67,401.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair an emergency meeting today on Monday, 21 December 2020 amid travel ban. The travel ban has censored UK travellers from almost all of Europe and worldwide.
As per Sunday’s move, ferries are subsequently closed from the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel. Canada imposed the UK travel ban for most of the passengers from Sunday midnight for the next 72 hours.
Unlike others, Portugal is only allowing Portuguese nationals to fly from the UK but, they must have a negative COVID-19 test. Netherlands and Latvia have taken a step to impose a longer UK travel ban that will last until the New Year.
The Czech Republic in this case has imposed a 10-day quarantine as mandatory for anyone who lands from the UK. Lastly, Saudi Arabia has suspended entry through land and seaports for the next 7 days too.
